The One and Only Ivan won the Newbery award in 2013 and finally in 2020 we get to read what happens to the beloved characters in the novel. The animated movie will be coming out later in 2020. I listened to The One and Only Bob which is told through the feisty little dog named Bob in the original novel. It was read by Danny Devito who also is the voice of Bob in the movie. All I can say is FABULOUS!
In this story, we see what happens to all of the characters and then a hurricane hits the area and all of the animals are in danger. It is fast-paced and full of animal characters who do remarkable things.
Third and fourth graders will love to listen and read this book. I can see it as a read aloud for second graders but there is a lot of worry about animals dying, so students who are sensitive might have a hard time with it. No animals in the story actually die at the end of the book!
Genre: Animal Story, Contemporary, Grades 3-5
Rating: 5/5
Caution: Worry about animals dying.
